Revolution! (tvr!.wad)
Mods used: Lithium
Source Port: GZDoom
I played this on and off for a few days. The maps are no where near what we have come to expect from modern slaughter-like custom levels. They're meant to tell a story, one that admittedly went over my head or I didn't pay attention to. When you're in the mood to play some DOOM, you turn off your "I want to pay attention to lore".
I also must admit, I did play this with Lithium, a wonderful RPG-like mod one can find on the ZDoom Forums. Lithium seems to have a built in fast mode for the monsters so I found myself getting my ass handed to me unexpectedly. Without that, I wouldn't have died at all during my run. Now, let's get onto how I feel about these maps:
They're short. Some of them are, some of them aren't. You'll find yourself blazing through some of the later levels and wonder "is that it?" Then there's the key/switch hunt. Some objects or doors are going to have their usual color borders to tell you that a red keycard is needed for this switch. But then there's some instances where there are no clear indication. You see a door, you hump it and nothing happens. So you run around for thirty minutes trying to find a switch hidden somewhere in the level. Is this player error? Yes. Could this have been resolved with hints? Yes. A brighter sector, a blinking sector, a switch near the key corresponding to the door that should be opened would help the player.
Moving onto monster placements. It's... tame. Think DOOM's Episode 1 monster progression throughout the game. Rare are revenants, archviles or arachnotorns. Plenty are cacodemons, zombies, imps, pinkies and hellknights. I'm not against such usage of monsters either, it's refreshing to dive back into a simple gameplay rather than running and screaming that there's 500 revenant missiles chasing you, three archviles laughing as you're being blasted to the sky and your invulnerability sphere is starting to fade.
Do I recommend to give Revolution! a try? I think so. 2001 vintage megawad with decently detailed (for the time) levels. Some of them are short, but I found myself enjoying it 'till the end.
